OUR MISSION

The mission of the Hopi Distance Project is to empower our Hopi people through culturally inspired health and wellness activity, prioritizing outreach related to the physical act of running and food security.

We believe in collaborative efforts, moving further together. The Hopi Distance Project (HDP) will attempt to collaborate with and support other local programs and initiatives that promote health and wellness amongst our Hopi villages and people.

The Hopi Distance Project’s key areas of focus include:

  • Youth running programs focused on exposing young athletes to unique running opportunities beyond reservation and state borders;
  • Mentorship opportunities for runners of all ages;
  • Advocacy and support for Hopi runners focused on competing at elite levels of training;
  • Funding support to benefit the growth of Hopi runners;
  • Promoting local and traditional food sustainability as a key contributor to training improvement and overall physical health;
  • School health promotion advocacy and engagement;
  • Support local community running programs and events outside of the HDP.

At the Hopi Distance Project we believe in planting the seed early, and nurturing that seed to develop a deeper understanding of competition in running. We also believe that this can be done with a unique approach that will make participation feel like enjoyable time spent, and not a chore or obligation. As we grow we expect to expand our support beyond what is shared here.
